Think you can’t sing? Perfect. Most people who take their first musical improv class are convinced they “can’t sing.” The good news is that you don’t have to. Musical improv isn’t about having a beautiful voice: it’s about committing to a character, making bold choices, and discovering that you can create a song out of absolutely nothing. It’s surprising, joyful, and ridiculously fun.
In this beginner-friendly class you’ll learn simple, repeatable techniques for improvising songs, transitioning scenes into music, and singing out your character's emotions with confidence (even if you’ve never sung in front of another human being).
If you’ve ever watched a musical improv show and thought, “I wish I could do that… but I definitely can’t,” this class is for you! . Taught by guest instructor Susan Gray (Hudson Valley Improv Touring Company), this class meets you exactly where you are and builds from the ground up. And yes — it all leads to a final performance where you take everything you've found and bring it to the stage. Your voice is already in there. Let's find it.

FINAL PERFORMANCE/ REQUIRED
4 Sessions
A 4-week intensive for performers ready to build their first solo piece.
Ever wanted to create and perform your own solo work, but didn't know where to start? Launch Into Solo brings the same private coaching process used to develop solo shows for years — now offered as a small group experience, limited to just 4 performers.
Each session is blocked for up to 3 hours (sessions may end early once the work is complete), giving the group real time for what solo work requires — to write, discover, and shape a piece rather than rush it. Participants leave with a live 10-minute performance of anything they desire: storytelling, stand-up, character monologues, performance art.
This class blends the connection of working alongside other performers with the depth of focused, private direction — because building solo work is personal, and it deserves real time.
Led by Samantha Jones — an award-winning solo performer with four solo shows of her own, and a director whose past clients have appeared at NY Fringe Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Winnipeg Fringe Festival, The Strawberry Festival, Women in Comedy Festival, The Mini Fridge, City Winery, Caroline's Comedy Club, and Joe's Pub. She has directed multiple Moth winners and TED Talk speakers, as well as comedians DL Hughley and Missi Pyle.
Format:
Culminates in a live performance of your first 10 minutes at the end of March.
Classes are held at Hudson Valley Improv's private studio in Rifton , NY and Online
Limited to 4 participants.

REQUIRED FINAL PERFORMANCE
This is the Wild West of Hudson Valley improv. At this point you have a solid understanding of improv, memorized gauntlet of games and exercises, you have a solid acting technique, a solid ensemble, you've performed, directed and created games. Now you're ready to put it all to the test. Here you learn how to draw upon your training at a moments notice and find the game in a scene with no pre-established rules or suggestions. You'll learn how to recognize when a game begins (or introduce one) within a scene WHILE playing the scene and then take it to the next level. You'll also heighten your ability to not only create game, but an entire show at breakneck speed. Nothing will shake you. Your final show? Oh yeah...it's gonna be mind blowing. (Cue eerie western music)
